In 2010, Hitachi International marked its 100th year in business and as they entered into their second century the promise from the President was that growth was imminent. The global giant is expanding its Canadian operation by more than doubling the size of its work force in Guelph, and boosting its output of Mining trucks by over 100 percent. The plant produces Construction, Quarry and Mining trucks; the Mining trucks in particular are capable of hauling 300-tonnes of coal, copper and other mining resources to North and South America, Western Europe and Western Africa.
Maple Reinders was chosen for the Design-Build contract for the Manufacturing Plant Expansion, which commenced in February 2012 and was completed in January 2013. The two-storey building expansion includes 1,708 square meters of office space (854m2 per floor) as well as 13,600 square meters of fabrication area. The plant expansion houses six (6) 75-tonne overhead cranes, each spanning 75 feet, and thirty (30) 7-tonne semi-gantry cranes. A natural light component was introduced in the building by installing fourteen (14) translucent Mega-doors along the plant exterior, most of which are approximately 40ft by 40ft in size.
