The Toronto Port Authority selected Maple Reinders to design and build ferry passenger transfer terminals between the Toronto Island Airport and the mainland. The Mainland Transfer Terminal is two stories of approximately 450 m2. The building provides a canopied area for passenger drop-off and pick-up, a foyer area, seating area, escalator and elevator and hydraulic passenger loading ramp/gangway assembly. The main floor handles arriving and departing passengers for ground transportation, accommodating up to 200 passengers per hour. The second floor is designated for arriving and departing ferry passengers and includes a waiting area for 90 people, washrooms, circulation space, eight electronic check-in kiosks and a communications room. The Island Transfer Terminal is also two stories of approximately 200 m2, with foyer area, seating area and hydraulic passenger loading ramp/gangway assembly. The first and second floors are laid out on a similar basis to the mainland terminal, with identical passenger loads. This terminal also includes a 45 metre long elevated pedestrian bridge over an adjacent roadway to link the new island ferry terminal with the existing airport terminal. The contract was rolled out to include airport terminal renovations for Porter Airlines, an innovative commuter airline.
