McCain Foods Wastewater Treatment Facility  – Alberta

Maple Reinders was selected to design, construct and commission a new wastewater treatment plant for McCain Foods’ potato processing facility in Coaldale, Alberta. The new plant treats wastewater from both the existing and expanded processing facilities while supporting more efficient water use.

The treatment process includes a covered anaerobic lagoon that collects wastewater and sludge while capturing biogas. A biogas handling system removes moisture and hydrogen sulphide, allowing the recovered biogas to be used to help power the facility’s boilers.

Wastewater then moves through an activated sludge system and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for further treatment. The MBR uses specialized membranes to produce treated effluent before it enteres the water recycling system.

A key feature of the project is the advanced Water Recycling System. Granular activated carbon removes residual organic material before primary and secondary reverse osmosis systems removes dissolved compounds and ions. This process allows a portion of the treated water to be recycled for use within the facility.

Through the integration of wastewater treatment, biogas recovery and water recycling technologies, the new facility provides McCain with infrastructure designed to support its processing operations while improving water and resource efficiency.
