Widex is one of the world’s most innovative producers of digital hearing aids. The Denmark-based company is currently represented in more than 85 countries.
Maple Reinders’ assignment for Widex involved the design and construction of a new Canadian headquarters for research, development and production. Built on a greenfield site, the 20,084 SF, single-storey structure has two roof heights and incorporates white architectural precast and curtainwall.
The interior of the building includes an office area with executive offices, boardroom, meeting rooms, and a marketing section. The production area houses a Modelling Lab, the “Viper Room” (automated process in which hearing aid shells are built, based on customized computer profiles for individual clients), Shell Labs (for finishing hearing aid shells), an electronics department, Quality Control, Health & Safety rooms, and a warehouse.
An interior “street” runs through the centre of the building. Measuring 15 feet high, a peaked vault with intermittent skylights runs over the street, adding to the feeling of spaciousness. The street begins at the reception area and terminates at the lunchroom, which leads to a covered outdoor patio for employees. A gas connection at the patio was also provided for barbequing in summertime.
