Maple Reinders delivered a large-scale, low-carbon district energy system as part of the Oakridge redevelopment in Vancouver, British Columbia. The system provides space heating, domestic water heating and cooling to support the needs of the entire development.
Designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 68% compared to traditional energy solutions, the system combines a closed-loop geothermal exchange system, waste heat recovery, electric chillers and electric and natural gas boilers for peak demand. The project is the first district energy system designed to meet the City of Vancouver’s Low-Carbon Energy System requirements.
Maple’s scope included the construction and fit-out of the Central Energy Plant, along with district piping, energy transfer stations and cooling towers. These systems work together to efficiently distribute heating and cooling throughout the Oakridge development.
The project required extensive coordination with the developer’s designers, construction managers and other contractors working across the site. Equipment and services were installed within shared construction areas while maintaining the space required for the district energy infrastructure.
Through careful planning and collaboration, Maple delivered an innovative energy system designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and support the long-term needs of the Oakridge community.
