Maple Reinders was awarded the stipulated bid contract for the construction of a K-8 school in the community of Westbrook, in the foothills of Cochrane, Alberta, for Rocky View Schools.
The building consists of a permanent structure containing a gymnasium, administration offices, ancillary facilities and learning commons while all nine classrooms are modular units. The construction of the school took place while the existing Westbrook School (built in 1953) was in use for an entire school year. The contract included abatement and demolition of the existing school which was undertaken during the summer break.
Mass timber was used throughout the school with glulam post and beam structures used in the gymnasium, library and learning commons. The mass timber was carried through to the exterior, which complements the Western ranch feel and the nature surrounding the school site.
